Jeff Spencer is a charter member, past president, and current vice president of the Petroleum History Institute (PHI). A geoscientist and principal with Sentinel Energy, LLC, in Houston, he holds a B.S. in Geology from the University of Cincinnati and an M.S. in Earth Sciences from the University of New Orleans. His professional experience includes roles with Amromco Energy, Midstates Petroleum, Black Pool Energy, Samson, Osprey Petroleum, Unocal, and Amoco Production Company. Spencer has authored or co-authored more than fifty oilfield history papers and is the author of Texas Oil and Gas (2013) and Illinois Oil and Gas (2023). He served as Historian for the Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies (GCAGS) from 2010 to 2025 and is an avid collector of postcards, philatelic material, and ephemera related to the petroleum industry.
