
R. Bryan McAuley is Site Manager of the San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site for the Texas Historical Commission, a position he has held since 2008. As part of the project team, he helped develop and implement the site’s master plan, culminating in the opening of a new visitor center in 2018. He continues to oversee daily operations, guide ongoing improvements—including the opening of a public archeology lab in 2026—and serve as a liaison to volunteers, donors, and state leadership.
With more than 25 years of experience in public history, Bryan has worked extensively across Texas museums and historic sites, with a strong focus on visitor advocacy and engagement. Before joining the Texas Historical Commission, he served as Deputy Director of the Fort Bend Museum Association, following earlier roles as Communications Director and Director of Programs at the George Ranch Historical Park. He also served as the first coordinator for the Texas Independence Trail Region, a heritage tourism initiative serving 28 southeast Texas counties.
Bryan holds a Master of Arts in Political Science and Sociology from Texas State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Government and Anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin. His career reflects a deep commitment to preserving Texas history and creating meaningful, accessible experiences for visitors of all backgrounds.
