The Legacy of Billie Carr - Godmother of Texas Liberals: Mentoring Women for Justice

Friday, March 510:30 am Central

About this event

Billie Carr (1928-2002) worked as a political organizer at Texas state and national level for half a century. Known as “The Godmother” for her work on behalf of the liberal wing of the Democratic Party, she was mentored by Frankie Randolph (1894-1972) a leader and benefactress of liberal causes. Throughout her career, Carr, too, became a mentor to many women, her protégées, in turn, making their own distinctive mark in campaigns for justice that encompassed civil rights, voting rights and championing the voice of minorities.

The manner and methods of Carr’s unique, effective and surprising mentoring approach will be unraveled by three women who came under her positive influence, her granddaughter, Jennifer Carr Allmon, Texas State Representative Senfronia Thompson, Texas State Senator Carol Alvarado. Declan Dunne, author of a biography on Billie Carr would moderate the panel.
