This panel introduces researchers to the rich and evolving Texas history resources housed at Southern Methodist University. Presenters from the DeGolyer Library, the SMU Archives, and the Rees-Jones Library of the American West highlight key manuscript, archival, photographic, and printed collections available to scholars, students, and the public. Together, the papers showcase both longstanding and newly developed resources, offering insight into how SMU’s libraries preserve, interpret, and provide access to materials essential for the study of Texas and the American West. The session emphasizes the breadth of available sources and the continuing role of research libraries in supporting historical scholarship.

Presenters

Russell L. Martin III

Russell L. Martin III is Director of the DeGolyer Library at Southern Methodist University, where he oversees collection development, endowments, and outreach to local, regional, and national audiences. Appointed director in 2001, he previously worked at the American Antiquarian Society and has been active in rare books and manuscripts librarianship for decades. Martin holds degrees in English from SMU and the University of Virginia and a master’s degree in library science from the University of Illinois.
