Charles Swenson’s research focuses on Camptown Cemetery in Brenham, a defining feature of the Camptown freedom colony. Working from a census of those interred there alongside archival records, this study has revealed rich details about the community from its establishment after emancipation through the present day. Cemeteries, as one of the key institutions of freedom colonies, provide an invaluable window into the identity of individuals and the broader social fabric they created .
